Youth Commonwealth Games: Kiptala, Graham struggle in day one as beach volleyball side bag first win

Kenyan cyclists Daniel Kiptala and Billy Graham remain optimistic about their prospects and aims despite finishing in 12th and 23rd positions respectively in Saturday’s individual time trials at the seventh edition of the Youth Commonwealth Games that, got underway at the Lara cricket Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago.
The two also summed up as Kenya’s first representatives, following the subsequent arrival of the Kenyan team at the heart of Trinidad.
Liebenberg Miles Bailey representing South Africa was the overall winner of the event as he clocked a winning time of 19:17.62, over three minutes ahead of second placed Scottish international Rowe Elliot, with Heath Will closing the podium places in third spot.
As for Kenya, their performances left them as Africa’s second placed side, with Namibia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Ghana following suit.
"Our main challenge today was the fluctuating weather conditions, with the high temperatures and rain affecting our rhythm,” Graham told NOC-Kenya Media while reflecting on his performance. “I had to make sure I paced myself to avoid accidents and injuries, especially with the road race ahead on Monday. I am confident that I will deliver improved results during the road race."
Kiptala finished with a time of 20:59.70, while Graham clocked 21:42.17 - over two minutes behind the winning time.

Elsewhere, the girls Beach Volleyball team stunned Bermuda with a 2-0 straight sets victory in their first match of the Youth Club Games.
Abigail Chebet and Sharon Jepkogei will be looking to keep the momentum going when they play hosts Trinidad and Tobago in another group A match at the Black Rock Facility in Tobago.
In Swimming Aker Mutinda and Sara Mose take a dive into the competitions with both in the first event which is the 50m butterfly. Sara and Aker will be in heats 3 and 4 respectively.
